As opposed to flood damage, the damaging effects of stormwater pollution does not happen in large, rare events.
The majority of pollutants can be found in small, everyday events. Therefore, the approach to designing stormwater treatment devices needs to be different than for other stormwater infrastructure such as pits and pipes.
The same way peakflow modelling needs to consider the time of concentration for the catchment in order to determine what rainfall gives the highest flow, design of stormwater treatment systems needs to consider the time it takes for water to pass through the system.

The WSUD Calculator comprises of tools for optimising the design of stormwater treatment systems such as raingardens and stormwater bioretention systems, based on local conditions. They are practical tools, and tools for designing stormwater reuse systems and assessing the real impact of green roofs are under development.
The Raingarden Design Tool allows the user to assess all aspects of the raingarden sizing that will have an impact on performance, ensuring the money invested provides the greatest benefit to the environment.
